About Patsy
About the figure, Ms. Fleming has written, “I create my figure
from a model and lead it away from reality. In the model I may see
a reflection of love or grief that I have known but I also impose
on the figure my own history and experience. About her abstract paintings
Fleming says, “Color and line are my vehicles for the expression
of memory, imagination and a lifetime of witness. Art in a time of
crisis: It seems these days we are in a continual state of crisis.
I paint with energy and empathy to escape the reality of our lives
right now. We catch a moment, catch a lifetime in paint. It is my
hope that the observer finds meaning in my art according to his or
her own experience and thoughts.
A graduate of Vassar College, Ms. Fleming has studied painting at
Cranbrook Academy of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts,
New York University and the Yellow Barn Studio.
Patsy Fleming interrupted her many years of a painting career to work
in the US government. Believing in public service as well as art,
she worked in Congress and in the Clinton Administration, where her
last post was Director of National AIDS Policy in the White House.
Ms. Fleming’s work has been exhibited and/or is in private collections
in New York, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Washington, Edinburgh, Scotland
and St. Petersburg, Russia and in many other cities across the country.
